Documentaries
By Tina Morris From http://rifilmfestival.com • Aug 8th, 2010 • Category: Blog Entries.LocalYep, RIFF’s got ‘em. While several recent interviews and posts have focused on animation and feature films, RIFF 2010 has its share of noteworthy documentaries.
Documentaries seem to have become more prevalent the last few years. Popularity of the Documentary Channel is testament to that and certainly they serve to inspire as well as inform. For a filmmaker, documentary offers a more flexible art form with fewer rules to be followed. A few of the selections from RIFF 2010 that epitomize this point include:
- Prayers for Peace – a brother’s tribute to his soldier sibling
- The Sandwich Movie – a different look at an old skill
- And What Remains – I can’t give it away now, can I?
Movie goers have grown up trying to guess the ending and predict what the protagonist is thinking. Documentary however, is a kimono with many hidden pockets. Shot in real life, documentary can be as simple or as complex as real life. The filmmaker may or may not reveal the point upfront. Dealing with facts, not fiction provides an avenue to communicate powerful messages.
So, do plan on coming to see our selection of documentaries this year. I would also like to note that googlers should not confuse RIFF with RIIFF. The Rhode Island Independent Film Festival is probably great too, but surely not as much fun as RIFF 2010.
